One of the basic things that you need to know in poker is that there are 13 ranks from high to low. For example, a standard deck of 52 cards contains Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 in four suits club, diamond, spades, and heart.
When you’re learning about how to play poker, the rules of betting always remain the same regardless of the game variant. No matter whichever game you play, like Texas Holdem, Omaha, 32 draw poker, 7 card stud poker, Americana Poker, etc., the betting rounds are as follows:
- Pre-Flop – After the cards are dealt, the first betting round or Pre-Flop begins starting from the players who are sitting immediately left of the dealer. They make a move by calling either the big blind, folding his cards, or raising the bet based on his cards’ strength. The betting round continues the same way and ends when everyone has put equal chips in the pot or folds. Here, in pre-flop, the player with the big blind position can ‘check’.
- Flop – After this pre-flop round, three community cards are being dealt face-up on the table, after which the next round of betting commences.
- Turn – When one or more cards are dealt, the third round of betting begins.
- River – Here, the final community card is dealt, and the final round of betting starts.
To win in poker, you need to form a hand according to the hand ranking rules.
